Below are examples of the types of roof flashings.

What is Roof Flashing?

All roofing systems require flashings to be installed on area of the roof where a penetration occurs. Examples would include rakes, eaves, chimneys, vent stacks, skylights and valleys. These flashings are made of 26-guage metal and come in a variety of colors to complement your roof and color of your home. Each type of flashing has a different name for their specific purpose as detailed below.

Step Flashing

Step Flashings should always be installed on any area where the roof meets a wall or the side of your home, you are protected from water intrusion. As you will see in the photo, the step flashing is installed at the highest point and overlaps while stepping down to the termination point.

Valley Flashing

This type of flashing is installed in all areas of your home where two pitches of your roof come together. These areas are designed to allow the water to properly flow off of your roof and down into the gutter system. To ensure that there are no leaks in this area, Ascent Roofing will put an ice and water barrier down the middle of this valley before the shingles and metal valley flashing to prohibit water leaks in these areas.

Gutter Apron

We install new gutter apron flashing with every roof replacement we do. This type of flashing is installed at all the eaves (where the roof meets the gutter) This flashing is installed on the roof deck before placing the ice & water barrier and the starter shingle. Gutter apron flashing is so important to have replaced because it will ensure that no water is coming in behind the gutters causing any of the fascia to rot or in our area, cause an ice dam.

Counter Flashing

If you should have a chimney on your home, we will install a 26-guage steel counter flashing around any portion of the chimney that touches the roof system. In order to install this heavy counter flashings, we will grind approximately one inch into the mortar joint to provide us with an area to make a custom counter flash of your chimney. We will then insert the top of the flashing into the mortar joint of the chimney and overlap the flashing and solder them together to create a watertight barrier. Once that has been completed, we will use a high-grade mortar caulk to fill any gaps.

How will I know if my flashing is causing a roof leak?

Most homeowners will not be able to determine if the leak they are experiencing is caused by a failed flashing or another roofing issue. To determine the cause of your leak, you will need a trained technician who is qualified to inspect your roof and provide a solution. Ascent Roofing Solutions will always provide you with a free inspection and estimate. Call us today at (614)280-1043 to get your Columbus, Ohio roof repaired the right way.
